TSMC now controls over 72 percent of the global foundry market as Samsung loses ground and SMIC closes in. New tariffs and AI chip demand are redrawing the competitive map for US investors and tech buyers

TSMC's dominance in the global chip foundry market has become a widening gap that competitors are struggling to close. In the second quarter of 2026, TSMC's market share rose to 72.5%, according to TrendForce, while Samsung's share declined to 5.9%. The difference between the two now stands at 66.6 percentage points, a spread that has grown even as the industry reaches new revenue highs.

This divergence is driven by TSMC's advanced 3-nanometer and 5-nanometer production lines, which are operating at full capacity due to sustained demand for AI server chips and early inventory builds for major smartphone launches. TSMC's foundry sales reached nearly $40.2 billion for the quarter, an increase of 12.1% from the previous period. In contrast, Samsung's revenue grew by just 1.8% to $3.26 billion, falling further behind both TSMC and smaller competitors.

TrendForce reported that the global pure-play foundry market reached approximately $53.49 billion in revenue in Q2 2026, driven by strong AI chip demand and high utilization at leading-edge nodes.

The more immediate challenge for Samsung comes from below. China's SMIC recorded a 20% increase in quarterly revenue to $3.01 billion, raising its market share to 5.4% and narrowing the gap with Samsung to just half a percentage point. SMIC's growth is fueled by advance procurement in PC and notebook supply chains and increased chip demand amid global memory shortages, rather than the AI-driven surge benefiting TSMC.

For US investors and technology buyers, the competitive landscape is shifting. TSMC's $265 billion Arizona expansion strengthens its position as the Biden administration prepares new semiconductor tariffs that would exempt companies manufacturing within the United States. Samsung and SMIC lack comparable US production capacity, and SMIC faces additional export restrictions on chipmaking equipment. If these tariffs are enacted, TSMC's lead would be reinforced not only by technology and capital, but also by US trade policy.

Despite TSMC's record-setting quarter, Wall Street's response has been subdued. Shares closed at $428.03 on September 10, down 1.68% for the day and about 10% below the all-time high set in June. Investors appear to be weighing TSMC's operational strength against broader market concerns and the uncertain effects of new tariffs.

According to TrendForce, TSMC's advanced 5nm, 4nm, and 3nm production lines were fully booked in Q2 2026, reflecting the company's ability to capture surging AI chip demand while Samsung's foundry share declined from 6.5% in Q1 to 5.9% in Q2.

Other foundries are also feeling the pressure. United Microelectronics Corp (UMC) held a 3.9% share with $2.18 billion in revenue, while GlobalFoundries accounted for 3.2% with $1.79 billion. The top 10 foundries collectively generated $53.49 billion in revenue, up 11.5% from the previous quarter, but most of this growth accrued to TSMC.

These developments mirror trends in other technology sectors, where a single company's operational scale and strategic positioning can leave competitors struggling to remain relevant. As reported earlier, even strong results can be overshadowed by market skepticism when future growth or policy risks are in play.

According to the Federal Reserve, US manufacturing output for computers and electronic products increased 4.2% year-over-year as of July 2026, reflecting sustained demand for advanced chips and related hardware. The US government's CHIPS Act continues to direct significant investment into domestic semiconductor production, but the benefits are uneven, with TSMC's Arizona project outpacing most competitors in both scale and speed.

TSMC's ongoing expansion, combined with the potential for tariff protection, is redefining what it takes to compete in the global chip industry. Samsung's incremental progress and SMIC's rapid advance from below underscore the increasingly challenging environment for foundries. The data indicates that operational excellence and alignment with geopolitical policy are now as critical as technical capability. For investors, the implication is clear: in this sector, scale and policy access are creating barriers that may be insurmountable for rivals unless they undertake significant changes.

Semiconductor foundries are specialized manufacturing facilities that produce chips designed by other companies. Unlike integrated device manufacturers, foundries do not design their own chips but focus on high-volume, high-precision fabrication for clients ranging from smartphone makers to cloud computing providers. The complexity and cost of building advanced foundries-often exceeding $10 billion per site-mean that only a few companies can compete at the leading edge. As chip demand shifts toward AI, automotive, and high-performance computing, the ability to deliver at scale and adapt to evolving trade regulations is becoming the decisive competitive advantage.
